10/2/03: I signed up for a sock knitting class at The Knitting Tree in Madison, Wisconsin.
10/11/03: First class of two. There are four of us learning how to use double-pointed needles to knit wool socks. We're using a type of yarn that is painted rather than dyed, so the pattern is built into the yarn.
This is the yarn that we're using, Big Mexiko. The label seems to be printed in German, but I can tell you this: It is 100% Schurwolle superwash. (virgin wool) It's 3-ply and I'm guessing it's DK (sport) weight. We're using size 5 Crystal Palace bamboo double pointed needles. All of the above pictures were taken right after my first class. All that work for over an hour and I had about an inch and a half to show for it! You can see how the double pointed needles are used to make a tube. The interesting thing about it is that you are continuously working on the outside, so you only have to knit, never purl. 10/13/03: I'm done with my homework! We were supposed to continue knitting to the point where we will learn to turn the heel at our next class. The pattern calls for this portion of the sock to be 9 inches, but it's really a matter of preference, and as you can see I decided to keep mine at about 5.5 inches. I'm glad to see that some red finally came into the pattern. It was so dark before that point! |
